Fibre Art

A new direction lately has been the fun of creating two- and three-dimensional pieces manipulating not paint but woollen fibre.  The medium of needle felting allows a playful and easily-edited relationship with the emergent work ~ unlike watercolour!  (At least, it feels playful till you inevitably stab yourself in the fingertip...)

Also the tactile quality of these beautifully-dyed, warm, living curls of sheep, goat and kid-hair is sensuous and deeply interactive.  Sometimes I combine sewing with pure felting to mix things up or add detail.  Needle-felted pieces make sweet and unique gifts, too.

Yes, always the birds.

Many thanks to my dear friend Marcia Kummerle of Good Fibrations angora goat and fibre farm in Barnardsville, NC for first introducing me to this craft and then inviting me back to teach it!

Unique needle-felted mobiles are especially fun! This was my very first felt creation and grew from the bluebird I made in class to a whole flock of songbirds to delight a precious new baby.

A sea full of creatures to catch the eye of someone small!
